The Church of the Advent is located at 338 Academy Street in beautiful and historic Madison, GA. Our Interim Priest-In-Charge is The Reverend Mark Stewart Johnson. Fr. Johnson was ordained to the priesthood June 24, 2023, and came to Advent July of 2023.
Advent is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta – 50,000 people in 117 churches and missions in central and north Georgia.
We are also part of The Episcopal Church, consisting of over 6,500 parishes and 1.7 million communicants in 16 countries
We are part of the world-wide Anglican Communion – born out of the Church of England and now the third largest Christian group in the world.
Advent has a rich history that complements the extraordinary past of Madison. The first Episcopal parish was assembled in 1846, closed in 1933 and re-established in 1953. The current church building, built in 1844, has been ours since 1961 and the parish house was acquired and renovated four years later.
One hallmark of the parish’s culture is a strong spirit of loyalty and intense affection toward the church as an integral part of the fabric of Madison’s faith and life community.
Our purpose is to challenge ourselves and the world to love like Jesus as we worship joyfully, serve compassionately, and grow spiritually.
Our goal is to be a transformational Church where we worship, educate, and engage in serving and healing our community.
The Church of the Advent celebrates Holy Eucharist (Communion or the Lord’s Supper) at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. Rite I with older more traditional language is used at 8 a.m, and is a quieter, more contemplative service. Rite II in a more contemporary idiom is at 10.30 a.m and features music with organ and congregational singing of hymns. Morning Prayer is Wednesday at 9:00 AM.
